Impact of corruption on the health sector
- As mentioned at the beginning of this lesson, corruption has an overall detrimental effect on health outcomes. Likewise, less corruption and higher levels of transparency, accountability and integrity are correlated with better health outcomes (UNDP 2011a).
- Corruption undermines the legitimacy of the public sector, and in this case the health system. This can lead to a loss of trust among the population and donors. Similarly, conflicts of interest and undue influence can distort medical research.
