INTEGRATING ANTI-CORRUPTION IN THE WATER SECTOR

Water resource management includes assignment of water use rights; reforestation of the upper catchments of watersheds; erosion control; regulation of groundwater use; water harvesting; control of water pollution by domestic waste water, industry and agriculture; protection of river banks; flood control works (dikes and sluices); and climate change mitigation projects. Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM), a further developed WRM approach, promotes the “coordinated development and management of water, land and related resources” (UNDP et al., 2011). Corruption risks increase due to the more complex and therefore potentially less transparent governance structures.
