Case study 3

Summary of the project

The ultimate goal of this project was to improve water access in three micro regions in the Torola River Basin, especially for women and children. In order to improve water governability, we established social audit mechanisms to promote transparency, accountability and efficiency in the management of this fundamental resource. The intention was to enhance water service delivery, create awareness in the population about transparency and accountability on water management, and strengthen local actors’ capacities to manage water in an integrated way, improving access to water for the most vulnerable.

The three micro regions (municipalities association) identified by CO El Salvador within the national map of extreme poverty (UNDP, FLACSO/FISDL, 2005), are: Microrregión Nororiental de Morazán (MRNODEMO); Microrregión Manantiales del Norte de San Migue; (MANORSAM); Asociación de Municipios del Norte de Morazán (AMNM).
